Your Spain Road Trip

Spain truly does have something for everyone, whether you want to get closer to nature, experience local culture in rural towns and villages, or soak up the buzzing city atmosphere while taking in the history and architecture. Since the south of the country remains warm in winter, there are no seasonal restrictions on when you should rent a camper van in Spain. It’s a popular destination for van lifers, so you’ll find plenty of infrastructure that’ll make your trip very convenient, and as long as you respect the land and locals, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Driving rules in Spain

When driving in a new country, it’s best to familiarize yourself with their driving rules before you arrive. Here are a few tips for driving your camper in Spain:

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road and pass on the left. This means that at traffic circles, you should give way to vehicles coming from the left and drive in a
    counterclockwise direction.
  • Seatbelts are required for all occupants of the vehicle, so always wear your seatbelt.
  • Drivers must have a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration documents, and proof of insurance.
  • Speed limits vary depending on the type of road. In urban areas, the general speed limit is 31 mph (50 km/h), although a new law has been introduced to give one-way urban
roads a speed limit of 18 mph (30 km/h). On non-urban roads, the speed limit is typically 55 mph (90 km/h) unless otherwise noted. Major roads and highways usually have a speed limit of 74 mph (120 km/h). Keep an eye out for speed limit signs and make sure you’re following local rules.
  • Many of the highways are toll roads. Check out the information on toll road signs and rules below.

Paying tolls in Spain

In Spain, many highways have tolls. These toll roads are called autopistas, while autovias are always toll-free. When you drive your roadsurfer camper van in Spain, you can decide whether or not to use toll-free highways or (private) toll roads.

Private toll roads are marked with an “R” or “AP” and a toll sign on the traffic signs. Please pay attention and do not drive through the “Telepeaje” booths, as those are only for vehicles with a transponder installed. You can check which ones are toll roads and how much they cost here. Your roadsurfer camper van or Class C RV should be under the “Ligeros” (light vehicles) classification. The amount you’ll pay depends on the region and how far you’re traveling. All roads must be paid for in euros with either cash or card. Most of the toll roads have manned booths where you can speak to someone to get information and pay the toll. Some toll roads have touchscreen machines, and these can be identified via a blue sign showing a bank card.

Camping in Spain

Whatever your camping style, when you rent a camper van in Spain, you’ll find your perfect travel destination, whether you’re headed to the beach, the mountains, or one of Spain’s incredible cities. Download our roadsurfer spots App to find unique places to stay, full of local charm and often with extra activity options. Read on for info on the different types of camping in Spain.

  • Campgrounds/RV Parks: Spain has numerous campgrounds and RV parks equipped with facilities suitable for campers and RVs. These sites often offer amenities such as water and electrical hookups, waste disposal, bathrooms, showers, and sometimes pools and playgrounds.
  • Aires and RV Service Areas: Aires are designated areas specifically for RVs and camper vans. Some provide only an overnight parking space, while others have basic facilities such as waste disposal stations, fresh water supply, and sometimes electrical hookups. Aires are more common in certain regions like Catalonia and the Basque Country.
  • Camper Stops and Parking Areas: Many towns and cities in Spain have designated parking areas or dedicated spaces for camper vans. These spots are often located near the city center or tourist attractions, allowing camper van travelers to conveniently explore urban areas without having to travel too far for the day.
  • Dispersed or Wild Camping: Dispersed camping in a camper van is illegal and not allowed anywhere in Spain. However, there are plenty of free camping options in designated areas, some even in extra beautiful settings, such as our roadsurfer spots, so you’ll rarely feel restricted by this law. In these designated areas, often in national parks and rural regions, there may be specific regulations and guidelines for overnight parking, so it’s important to check before you arrive.
  • Beachside Camping: Spain’s extensive coastline offers many opportunities for camping near the beach. In most coastal areas you’ll find camping spots or designated parking areas specifically for camper vans right next to the beach.
  • Farm Stays: Farm camping spots, known as agroturismos, allow you to stay on working farms or rural properties where you can experience farm life and enjoy fresh local produce during your stay.
