Your Nevada Road Trip

Cruise your camper van rental along the iconic Highway 50, also known as the “Loneliest Road in America”, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe or explore the crimson landscapes of the Valley of Fire State Park. Fancy an out-of-this-world experience? Rent an RV in Nevada and drive the Extraterrestrial Highway (at a little under warp speed, of course). Death Valley and Bryce Canyon are both must-see, while no Nevada trip is complete without a few rolls of the dice in Las Vegas.

Driving rules in Nevada

With seemingly endless highways, an abundance of wildlife and weather that jumps from one extreme to the other, driving here offers its own set of challenges. So for anyone renting a camper van in Nevada, keep the following points in mind.

  • Wildlife crossings: Nevada is home to a diverse range of wildlife, so be aware when driving and take extra caution at dawn and dusk. Also, watch out for large birds of prey that love to plant themselves in the middle of the road and fly away at their own pace.
  • Weather: Nevada has a desert climate, which means temperatures can rise quickly during the day and drop drastically at night. Be sure to check the weather forecast before embarking on your road trip and pack accordingly.
  • Daytime headlights: Renting a motorhome? Make sure your turn signals work and test those high beams. Driving in rural Nevada can be a dimly-lit affair. There are even stretches of highway that require daytime headlights!
  • Pulling over: While Nevada’s highways might seem empty, oncoming traffic can surprise you. When pulling over at night, stop in safe locations like pullouts or off-the-highway rest stops. In emergencies, pull completely off the highway with ample shoulder space.

Camping in Nevada

With two of America’s four deserts, Nevada is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. If you plan on renting a motorhome in Nevada and camping, make sure you’re following the rules and regulations.

  • National Parks: Want to camp in one of Nevada’s national parks? Be sure to secure any permits necessary and make reservations beforehand to avoid missing a spot.
  • Campfires: While open fires may be allowed in some campsites, others have strict fire bans. Always check for current restrictions before starting a campfire.
  • Leave no trace: Nevada’s beautiful landscapes are fragile and should be treated with care. Make sure to leave your camping spot as clean or cleaner than how you found it.
  • Dispersed camping: Dispersed camping, which refers to camping in national forests outside of a designated campground, is available on most BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands in Nevada for free. However, be sure to follow all regulations and guidelines while camping in these areas.
  • RV parks: If you prefer more amenities, there are plenty of RV parks and campgrounds available throughout Nevada. Again, be sure to make reservations in advance during peak season.

Popular events & festivals in Nevada

  • Burning Man Festival: Set in the heart of the Nevada desert, this unique event is a hub of art, self-expression and community, where massive art installations are erected and then set ablaze.
  • Las Vegas Elvis Festival: This festival is a grand celebration of Elvis Presley’s life and legacy, filled with live performances, tribute acts and events that recreate the atmosphere of the classic Vegas years.
  • National Cowboy Poetry Gathering: The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering held in Elko is a week-long event celebrating the cowboy and ranching lifestyle with poetry, music, storytelling and exhibitions.
  • Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival: Rent an RV in Nevada and head to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. This annual event showcases some of Shakespeare’s most beloved works in an open-air theater by the beautiful waters of Lake Tahoe.

When to visit Nevada

Nevada experiences diverse seasons throughout the year, each offering a unique charm. Winters (December to February) are chilly, particularly in the northern regions, making it an ideal time for winter sports enthusiasts to visit locations like Lake Tahoe. Spring (March to May) witnesses a beautiful bloom across the state, with mild temperatures perfect for outdoor activities. Summers (June to August) can be intensely hot, but it’s an exciting time to visit destinations like Las Vegas. Fall (September to November), with its comfortable temperatures and colorful foliage, is often considered the best time to explore Nevada in an RV rental.
