How does the RV rental security deposit work?

A security deposit is required for every RV rental to cover potential damages or extra costs. Here’s how the deposit works, how much it is, and what to expect during your trip.

The security deposit protects against possible damages or extra costs during your RV rental.

  • The deposit is a temporarily blocked amount on your credit or debit card.
  • It helps ensure that any damage or missing equipment is covered.
  • The deposit is automatically released if the RV is returned in proper condition.

The deposit amount depends on your pickup location and is always paid in the local currency.

  • USA: $850 (USD)
  • Europe: 800€ (EUR)
  • Switzerland: 800 CHF
  • Sweden: 9,250 SEK
  • Canada: $1,200 (CAD)
  • Norway: 10,000 NOK
  • UK: £700 (GBP)

You can pay the deposit by Visa, Mastercard, or American Express when picking up your RV in the U.S.

  • American Express is only accepted for rentals in the United States.
  • We do not accept cash, bank transfer, or PayPal for deposits.
  • The deposit must be paid in a single transaction, so make sure your card limit is high enough.
  • Your passenger can pay the deposit if needed—the cardholder’s name does not have to match the renter.

The deposit is temporarily blocked for up to 30 days and released automatically if there are no issues.

  • After your trip, the blocked amount is released if everything is in order.
  • Some banks may simply remove the charge rather than showing a refund on your statement.
  • You can check the status of your deposit in your roadsurfer customer account payment overview.

Make sure your card is ready for the deposit payment at pickup.

  • Know your card PIN and check your card’s limit before arrival.
  • Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are accepted in the U.S.
  • Outside the U.S., only Visa or Mastercard credit/debit cards are accepted—American Express is not supported.
  • We do not accept cash, bank transfer, or PayPal for security deposits.
