How does the campervan rental security deposit work?

A security deposit is required for every campervan hire to cover potential damage or additional costs. Here’s how the deposit works, how much it is, and what to expect during your journey.

The security deposit protects against possible damage or additional costs during your campervan hire.

  • The deposit is a temporarily blocked amount on your credit or debit card.
  • It helps to ensure that any damage or missing equipment is covered.
  • The deposit is automatically released if the campervan is returned in good condition.

The deposit amount depends on your pickup location and is always charged in the local currency.

  • UK: £700 (GBP)
  • USA: $850 (USD)
  • Europe: €800 (EUR)
  • Switzerland: 800 CHF
  • Sweden: 9,250 SEK
  • Canada: $1,200 (CAD)
  • Norway: 10,000 NOK

You can pay the deposit by Visa or Mastercard when collecting your campervan in the UK.

  • American Express is only accepted for rentals in the United States.
  • We do not accept cash, bank transfers, or PayPal for deposits.
  • The deposit must be paid in a single transaction, so please ensure your card limit is sufficient.
  • A passenger may pay the deposit if necessary—the cardholder’s name does not need to match the renter.

The deposit is temporarily blocked for up to 30 days and is released automatically if there are no issues.

  • After your trip, the blocked amount will be released provided everything is in order.
  • Some banks may simply remove the charge rather than showing a refund on your statement.
  • You can check the status of your deposit in your roadsurfer customer account payment overview.

Make sure your card is ready for the deposit payment at pickup.

  • Know your card PIN and check your card’s limit before arrival.
  • In Europe, only Visa or Mastercard credit/debit cards are accepted, American Express is not supported.
  • Visa, Mastercard, and American Express are accepted in the U.S.
  • We do not accept cash, bank transfer, or PayPal for security deposits.
