- If you plan to drive in the USA, you must have a valid driver’s license. International visitors may be able to use their home country’s driver’s license for a limited period, but it’s advisable to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. Some states may require an IDP, so check the specific requirements for the states you plan to visit.
- In the USA, overtaking is allowed in both the left and right lanes.
- The intersection is a 4-way stop (also known as an all-way stop) is indicated by stop signs in all four directions. Here the rule is: first come, first served. If the order is not clear, it is regulated by a hand signal.
- Unless there is a “no right on red” sign, it is allowed to turn right at a red light after stopping and ensuring that you are not obstructing anyone.
- School buses must not be overtaken when stopping to let pupils on or off. This also applies to the opposite lane. Pay attention to the hazard lights and the stop sign on the bus to avoid heavy fines.
- Traffic laws and regulations may vary slightly from state to state, but there are common rules that apply throughout the country.
