Driving rules in the USA

Driving in the USA offers a unique and exciting experience and a fantastic way to explore the country. However, it’s important to familiarise yourself with some key aspects of driving in the USA before you set off on your journey:

  • If you plan to drive in the USA, you must have a valid driver’s license. International visitors may be able to use their home country’s driver’s license for a limited period, but it’s advisable to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) as well. Some states may require an IDP, so check the specific requirements for the states you plan to visit.
  • In the USA, overtaking is allowed in both the left and right lanes.
  • The intersection is a 4-way stop (also known as an all-way stop) is indicated by stop signs in all four directions. Here the rule is: first come, first served. If the order is not clear, it is regulated by a hand signal.
  • Unless there is a “no right on red” sign, it is allowed to turn right at a red light after stopping and ensuring that you are not obstructing anyone.
  • School buses must not be overtaken when stopping to let pupils on or off. This also applies to the opposite lane. Pay attention to the hazard lights and the stop sign on the bus to avoid heavy fines.
  • Traffic laws and regulations may vary slightly from state to state, but there are common rules that apply throughout the country.

Camping in the USA

Camping in the USA offers a vast array of scenic locations, from national parks and forests to coastal campsites and remote wilderness areas, providing nature enthusiasts with endless opportunities to immerse themselves in the great outdoors.

  • State Campgrounds – are a little cheaper, usually spacious, often with table seating and a private fireplace. The sanitary facilities are not always included, but there is usually cold tap water and toilets.
  • Private Campsites – usually with electricity and water (Full Hook-Up) as well as internet access but they are a more expensive than state campgrounds. Insider tip: the campsites in national and state parks are beautiful and usually have sanitary facilities. Because of their special locations, these campgrounds are very popular, especially in the high season, so you will need to book months in advance.
  • Wild Camping – allows you to save a lot of money and spend the night in very special places in the middle of nature. In some states wild camping is illegal and only possible with a camping permit so its best to check your travel destination in advance.
