Soak up the sunshine in the capital of Algarve and discover a unique city steeped in history dating back to the fourth century BC when you hire a campervan in Faro. Stroll around the charming old town with its cosy alleyways, stunning ornate churches, and the macabre Bone Chapel decorated with the bones of over 1000 monks. Relax on one of Faro’s three pristine sandbar islands, and visit the Parque Natural de Ria Formosa, a wetland maze of canals, lagoons, and barrier islands recognised for its incredible wildlife. You’ll find that Faro feels more relaxed and laid back compared to the other Portuguese big cities, which makes it a great place to rent a campervan and start your exploration of the sunny Algarve.

If you’ve decided to hire a campervan in Faro, welcome on board! When you pick up your motorhome in Faro, you might be wondering where the best places to get food and fuel are, and where to park in the city. Read on for our recommendations to get your trip started with ease.
When you hire a campervan in Faro you can be on the road right away, trusting that your roadsurfer home on wheels is fully stocked. Your campervan comes with an awning, camping table and two chairs to enjoy the space outside of your vehicle. The kitchen box allows you to save money on eating out: you’ve got all the pots, pans, and utensils to cook up your own meals. There’s even a corkscrew and bottle opener, and a cafetière plus mugs for your morning coffee or tea, although you’ll want to bring dish towels, sponges, and eco-friendly dish soap. When you rent a small motorhome from Faro you will need to bring your own bedding, or you can hire what you need from the station. Full details of what’s included and our suggestions on what to bring along to your Faro campervan holiday can be found in the equipment list.
The weather is warm, sunny, and dry year-round in the Algarve, so the ideal time to rent a campervan in Faro is whenever you want! If you’re planning a winter escape, make sure to check that the campsites on your route are open ahead of time as some do close for the season. Planning ahead for where to sleep is also recommended for the summer when the region is at its busiest, but visit in Spring and Autumn (April-May and September-October), and you’ll find far fewer crowds (and still plenty of sunshine!). Cultural events like festivals, concert, and performances happen year-round in Faro and the surrounding area, so check out what will be happening when you’re there.
When you hire a campervan in Faro, you’ll need to fill up with freshwater at the beginning of your trip and empty your grey water before you return your campervan. This can usually be done at campsites, but if you need somewhere close to the roadsurfer station, here are two options:
To ensure a smooth return process at our Faro location, please remember to fill up with diesel and AdBlue at the end of your trip. You can do both at the nearest BP petrol stations to our location:
Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.
If you’d like to park in Faro to explore the city, there is a motorhome-friendly parking lot at the Continent supermarket (please see address below). We highly recommend avoiding driving further into the city centre as the streets are narrow and busy.
Motorways in Portugal are toll roads. They are either equipped with booths to pay on-site or are electronic toll roads:
There are also free roads, marked with “EN” but the travelling time might double if you choose them.
For a one-stop shopping location, in case you need to pick up anything you might have forgotten to pack, head to MAR shopping. It is a six-minute drive from the roadsurfer rental station, where you’ll find clothing shops, a Pingo Doce supermarket, an organic food shop, and even an IKEA! In Faro itself, find our supermarket picks listed below. There are also plenty of pharmacies in the centre of Faro to choose from, and a Decathlon for any outdoor clothing and sportswear you’ve forgotten.
There are few places to grab a drink and a bite to eat near the roadsurfer station in Faro. You can make the short drive into the centre of Faro and pick one of the many local cafes with outdoor seating, or if you need somewhere en route out of the city, there is a Starbucks at the Forum shopping centre on the outskirts of Faro.
Imagine falling asleep under the stars to the sounds of the ocean’s waves. Turn those dreams into reality and book a unique camping experience with the roadsurfer spots. From peaceful pitches in the countryside with panoramic views to beachfront spots perfect for surfers, you can find the perfect camping spot for your road trip route.
