Visa & travel requirements

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Germany. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning to travel:

  • Americans can visit Germany and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business without a visa.
  • You must have a valid U.S. passport with at least six months’ validity beyond your planned stay, and proof of onward travel or return ticket may be requested upon arrival.
  • If you plan to travel from Germany to other European countries, check the entry requirements for each country, as rules may vary.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval online before arrival. The process is simple and similar to an ESTA for the U.S.
