Visa & Travel Requirements

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to the United Kingdom. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning to travel:

  • Americans can visit the UK for up to six months as a tourist without needing a visa.
  • You must have a valid U.S. passport; it’s recommended that your passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay.
  • Border officials may ask for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, evidence of accommodation, and details about your travel plans upon arrival.
  • The UK is not part of the Schengen Area or the European Union. If you plan to travel onward to other European countries, check the entry requirements for each destination separately.
  • You do not need ETIAS approval for travel to the UK. However, starting in 2025, Americans visiting most European countries will need ETIAS approval before arrival.

RV Parking in London

Parking in central London isn’t always easy with a camper van, and you’ll need to be aware of the Congestion Charge zone, making sure to pay online if you enter it during charge times. The best option is to park and use public transportation to access the city center.

  • Drive 30 minutes and park in the Old Deer parking lot in Richmond (Park Ln, Richmond TW9 2RA). It costs £15.25 per day and is a 3-minute walk from
    Richmond train station.
  • You can park for free in Richmond Park, but make sure to check the current closing time to ensure you don’t get stuck. Park in the area closest to
the Roehampton Gate entrance and take bus number 430 from the Danebury Avenue/Minstead Gardens stop to Putney station for a train to central
    London.
  • Drive 40 minutes to Ealing Common and park for £3 per day on Warwick Road. From here it’s a 10-minute walk to Ealing Broadway station for trains to
    central London.
  • Drive 10 minutes to the Hounslow West underground station parking area and take the train from there.
Parking near the roadsurfer London station is limited, especially for camper vans. If you don’t want to drive into London and use one of the above
parking options, it may be easier to visit London before you pick up your camper van and head out on your road trip adventure.

Nearby Gas Stations

Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:

  • BP – Great South-West Rd, Feltham TW14 0PR

Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.

Water Tank Info

When you rent a camper van or Class B RV in London, you’ll need to fill up the fresh water tank, and then empty the black water at the end of your trip. Unlike in the U.S., there’s not many places to do this other than campgrounds, so the best option is to start and finish your adventure with a stay at a campground that has those facilities. However, some campgrounds may allow you to use their facilities for a small fee if you aren’t staying there.

Last-minute essentials in London

You should find all the essentials included in your rental, but for any last-minute items, as well as food, there are several grocery stores not far from the roadsurfer station. Tesco and Asda have clothes, sheets and comforters, household goods, and toiletries. If you have a lot of things to buy, try The Centre shopping center in Feltham, a 10-minute drive away, which has various grocery stores, a Boots pharmacy, clothing stores, and food courts.

  • Tesco: Dukes Green Ave, Feltham TW14 0LH
  • Asda: Tilley Rd, Feltham TW13 4BH
  • Lidl: New Rd, Feltham TW14 9BG
  • Tesco: Bulls Bridge Industrial Estate, Hayes Rd, Hounslow, Southall UB2 5LN
  • Aldi: Hospital Rd, Hounslow TW3 3HY
  • The Centre shopping center: 210 High St, Feltham TW13 4GU

Best Time to Visit London

London is in the southeast of England, which is one of the warmest parts of the country. As with the whole of the UK, June to August is the busiest time of year, but the most likely to bring sunshine and hot weather, perfect for visiting the coastline and enjoying the beach. Summer is also a great time for festivals! April, May, September, and October bring more rain, but if you’re not afraid of a few showers, then you’ll find it’s less busy, and you can experience the vivid colors of spring and fall.
