Rules for driving in Los Angeles

Drivers in Los Angeles must follow standard California traffic laws, with a few rules especially important for visitors. Traffic can be heavy in the city, so always allow extra time for your journey. Here are some of the most important rules to keep in mind:

  • Speed limits: Clearly posted on highways and city streets
  • Lane use: Keep to the right except when passing
  • Right turns: Allowed on red unless a sign says otherwise
  • Pedestrians: Always have the right of way at crosswalks
  • Seat belts: Required for all passengers
  • Cell phones: Only permitted with hands-free devices

Best time to visit Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a year-round destination due to its mild climate, with spring and autumn offering the most comfortable weather and fewer crowds. Each season has its own appeal, so here’s what you can expect throughout the year:

  • Spring (March–May): Comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds make it ideal for exploring the city and nearby national parks.
  • Summer (June–August): Inland areas are very hot, while the Pacific coast stays cooler for beach days and surfing. roadsurfer camper vans and Class C RVs are not permitted in Death Valley between May 15 and September 30.
  • Autumn (September–November): Mild weather with colorful scenery and less crowded attractions, making it one of the most comfortable times to visit.
  • Winter (December–February): Mild in Los Angeles, but colder in the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park. Some states require snow chains in winter, but these are not provided.

RV parking in Los Angeles

Long-term parking is available at Los Angeles International Airport, located just 15 minutes by taxi or rideshare from our station. While street parking can sometimes be found, regular street sweeping on Mondays and Tuesdays makes it less reliable. For peace of mind while you are on your roadsurfer trip, we recommend using the airport’s secure long-term parking facilities.

Nearby gas stations

Several gas stations are located close to the Los Angeles roadsurfer station for easy refueling before return. Depending on your camper model, you will need petrol or diesel, and some vehicles also require DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid). Check your vehicle details in advance to confirm the correct fuel type. DEF can be purchased at most Walmart and Target locations. Here are the nearest gas stations to our Los Angeles station:

  • Shell Gas Station, 4755 W. Imperial Hwy, Inglewood
  • ARCO Gas Station, 11402 Hawthorne Blvd, Hawthorne

Filling and emptying water tank in Los Angeles

There is a convenient dump station about 15 minutes from the Los Angeles roadsurfer station where you can empty grey and black water tanks. Opening hours are limited to a short daily window, so it’s a good idea to plan your return accordingly.

  • Hyperion Dump Station, 7660 West Imperial Highway, Playa Del Rey, CA 90293

As an alternative, many campgrounds around Los Angeles provide full water and waste facilities, which can be a comfortable option before returning your camper van or Class C RV rental.
