U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to the United Kingdom, which includes Scotland. Here’s what you should know before your trip:
If you want to park your camper van or RV rental and explore the city, there are many free Park & Ride car parks from which you can take the tram or the bus, for example:
Most city center car parks are limited to 4 hours. Car parks on George Street and Queen Street will cost around £4.60 per hour. Parking in the city center is free on Sundays before 12:30 pm and on certain public holidays.
Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:

When you rent a camper van in Edinburgh, you’ll need to fill up your water tank with fresh water at the beginning of your drive, and empty your black water before returning to the station. Fresh water can be filled at Shell gas station, Broxburn EH52 5BQ. CAMPA has a map showing black water and fresh water sites in Scotland, and UK Motorhomes has a directory of facilities in the UK (you’ll need to scroll down to the Scotland section).
The best time to rent a camper van in Edinburgh is April to June, when flowers bloom and nature wakes up from her winter slumber, but before the roads get too busy with summer traffic. In September and October the surrounding countryside will begin to shed its summer bounty turning the forests to dazzling shades of red and yellow, whilst still being warm enough to enjoy #vanlife
Of course, while summer is the busiest season, it’s also festival time. August sees the Edinburgh Art Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Edinburgh Military Tattoo, and the Edinburgh International Festival, all taking place in the city. Summer weather makes it a perfect time to roam the city in search of entertainment. Remember that in Edinburgh there is always a chance of rain, so bring your rain gear, whatever the season.
