Visa & Travel Requirements

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Sweden. Here’s what you should know before your trip:

  • Americans can visit Sweden and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa.
  • You must have a valid U.S. passport. It’s recommended that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
  • Border officials may ask for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, confirmation of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, allowing seamless travel between member countries during your visit.
  • Starting in 2026, Americans will need ETIAS approval to enter Sweden and other Schengen countries. Be sure to apply online before your trip once ETIAS is in effect.

RV Parking in Stockholm

Public transportation is great in Stockholm, so the easiest way to park and explore the city is to find a train station near your campground with a parking area, and then take the train into the city. You can also park in the Aimo Park at Stockholm University and walk to the Universitetet train station.

If you prefer driving into the city and parking in the center, you have the following parking options:

  • 103 Lindhagensgatan, 112 51 Stockholm
  • Sveavägen 164 A-P, 113 46 Stockholm
  • Parking Gröna Lund, Falkenbergsgatan 4, 115 21 Stockholm

Nearby Gas Stations

Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:

  • OKQ8 – Upplands Väsby, Släntvägen 2, 194 61 Upplands Väsby
  • Circle K – Antennvägen 2, 187 66 Täby

Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.

Water Tank Info

When you rent a camper van in Stockholm, you’ll need to fill it up with fresh water at the beginning of your trip and empty the grey water at the end.

It’s possible to fill up fresh water at gas stations with self-wash points in Sweden. However, we advise that you use a spare water bottle to collect the fresh water due to possible contamination from the hose.

Unlike other European countries, there are fewer roadside points with facilities to empty black water, so it may be best to drain your wastewater at your campground at the end of your adventure.

Best Time to Visit Stockholm

If you want to know the best time to rent a camper van in Stockholm, then you’ll have to decide what you want from your trip. Are you looking for a winter wonderland or do you want to experience midsummer revelry? Springtime has the least rain and beautiful blossoms in the city’s parks, while in the fall, the foliage turns yellow and red, mirroring many of the city’s buildings. As with many destinations, spring is probably the best time of year to visit Stockholm, when the winter chill dissipates, but before the crowds of summer arrive. However, many visitors say that June and August are the months when the city feels most alive, although it should be noted that many locals leave for their summer cottages for most of July.

Looking for the best camping spots near Stockholm after picking up your camper van rental? You’ll find plenty of excellent places to camp just a short drive from the city and throughout the beautiful lake and archipelago region.
