Here are a few additional tips including where to find gas and stock up on essentials.
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Portugal. Here’s what you should know before your trip:
Known as the city of the 7 hills, the streets of Lisbon are relatively steep and narrow (as well as very busy with cars and pedestrians). We highly recommend parking your roadsurfer camper van rental in the secure parking lot near the port in Rua da Cintra where you can also stay overnight. Parking costs €6 for 24 hours.
Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:
Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.
When you rent a camper van in Lisbon, you’ll need to fill it up with fresh water at the beginning of your trip and empty the grey water at the end. Intermarché grocery stores often have RV services which are perfect for this, or you can do it at your campground. The closest Intermarché to the station are:
You can also fill up your water tanks at the Repsol Alverca at à Repsol: En 10-Km 128 N, 2615-141 Alverca do Ribatejo, Portugal. Please note that this location is only for filling up, and emptying grey water is not possible here.
The best time to rent a camper van in Lisbon is March to May and September to October, when the weather is beautiful and it’s generally less crowded. Of course, with 300 days of sunshine each year, and the right clothing, you can visit Lisbon throughout the year, especially during the winter off-season (if you don’t mind the quieter vibe). Plus, campgrounds, restaurants, and tourist attractions are cheaper during the off-season. Film festivals take place during September and October, and there is always a street event whatever the season. June 13th is the day of St Anthony, Lisbon’s patron saint, and a day celebrated throughout the city.
Ready to hit the road and learn to surf? We recommend the SAL surf school at Carcavelos beach which is a 35 minute drive from our roadsurfer station. They also offer stand up paddling classes as well as surf and paddle board rentals.
