The best time to rent a camper van in Lisbon is March to May and September to October, when the weather is beautiful and it’s generally less crowded. Of course, with 300 days of sunshine each year, and the right clothing, you can visit Lisbon throughout the year, especially during the winter off-season (if you don’t mind the quieter vibe). Plus, campgrounds, restaurants, and tourist attractions are cheaper during the off-season. Film festivals take place during September and October, and there is always a street event whatever the season. June 13th is the day of St Anthony, Lisbon’s patron saint, and a day celebrated throughout the city.
Ready to hit the road and learn to surf? We recommend the SAL surf school at Carcavelos beach which is a 35 minute drive from our roadsurfer station. They also offer stand up paddling classes as well as surf and paddle board rentals.
When you rent a camper van in Lisbon, you’ll need to fill it up with fresh water at the beginning of your trip and empty the grey water at the end. You can also fill up your water tanks at the Repsol Alverca at à Repsol: En 10-Km 128 N, 2615-141 Alverca do Ribatejo, Portugal. Please note that this location is only for filling up, and emptying grey water is not possible here.

Known as the city of the 7 hills, the streets of Lisbon are relatively steep and narrow (as well as very busy with cars and pedestrians). We highly recommend parking your roadsurfer camper van rental in the secure parking lot near the port in Rua da Cintra where you can also stay overnight. Parking costs €6 for 24 hours.
Highways in Portugal are toll roads. They are either equipped with booths to pay on-site or are electronic toll roads.
Payment on-site: You can pay the toll conventionally at the exit of most roads. Please pay attention to the signs marked with a “V” (Via Verde) on green background, as those are reserved for people with transponders, and you should not drive on these roads if you don’t have one.
Electronic toll roads: Our camper vans with Portuguese plates are already registered on the electronic toll system. You can check your outstanding payments on this website by inputting the number plate. Please keep in mind that it can take up to 48 hours until it appears in the system. Alternatively, payments can be made at post offices and shops marked with “Payshop” flags.
If you are driving from outside of Portugal, it’s important to register the vehicle on the Easytoll system. As soon as you enter Portugal, you will pass through a toll booth. There is an entrance for non-Portuguese vehicles on the side where you will receive a receipt with an identification number and your plate number. When you drive through electronic toll roads, your plate will be scanned. From then onwards, the process is the same as for the Portuguese number plates mentioned above. Alternatively, you can register digitally with Easytoll before you enter the country.
The time you are allowed to spend on toll roads is limited and spending the night at a rest stop is not advisable. There are also free roads, marked with an “EN” but the traveling time might be double if you choose them.
