Visa & Travel Requirements
U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Portugal. Here’s what you should know before your trip:
- Americans can visit Portugal and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa.
- You must have a valid U.S. passport. It’s recommended that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
- Border officials may ask for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, confirmation of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
- Portugal is part of the Schengen Area, allowing seamless travel between member countries during your visit.
- Starting in 2026, Americans will need ETIAS approval to enter Portugal and other Schengen countries. Be sure to apply online before your trip once ETIAS is in effect.

Water Tank Info
When you rent a camper van in Faro, you’ll need to fill it up with fresh water at the beginning of your trip and empty your grey water before you return it. This can usually be done at campgrounds, but if you need somewhere close to the roadsurfer station, here are two options:
- Area de Servico da Quinta da Palmeria, R. da Palmeira 29, Albufeira – 30 minutes west of the roadsurfer station
- Intermarché, Quelfes, 8700-221 Olhão – 25 minutes east of the roadsurfer station, in the car park you will find a small station to fill and empty water. There are also laundry facilities here.
Best Time to Visit Faro
The weather is warm, sunny, and dry, year-round in the Algarve, so whenever you want to rent a camper van in Faro is the ideal time! If you’re planning a winter escape, make sure to check that the campgrounds on your route are open ahead of time as some do close for the season. Planning where to camp in advance is recommended for the summer when the region is at its busiest.
