Visa & travel requirements

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Germany. Here’s what you should know if you’re planning to travel:

  • Americans can visit Germany and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business without a visa.
  • You must have a valid U.S. passport with at least six months’ validity beyond your planned stay, and proof of onward travel or return ticket may be requested upon arrival.
  • If you plan to travel from Germany to other European countries, check the entry requirements for each country, as rules may vary.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. travelers will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) approval online before arrival. The process is simple and similar to an ESTA for the U.S.

When renting a motorhome in Erfurt, the most convenient approach is to locate a public parking space and then proceed with your journey via public transit. Various options are available in Erfurt:

Parking Garages and underground garages: Some popular choices include Parkhaus Anger 1 and Parkhaus am Dom.

Parking Lots on the outskirts of the city: We recommend the following options:

  • Messe Erfurt: Gothaer Str. 34, 99094 Erfurt, Germany.
  • Parking Lot at Steigerwaldstadion: Steigerwaldstraße 1, 99096 Erfurt, Germany (Note: This lot may get crowded during events.)

Filling and emptying water tanks in Erfurt

To refill your fresh water tank before you hit the road or to empty your grey water tank before you head back with the camper, we suggest using the “Tor zur Stadt Erfurt” motorhome site at the P+R Messe parking lot. Fresh water is available for €0.10 per 10 liters, and there’s a toilet cassette disposal machine for €3 per use (which includes grey water). This service is accessible 24/7.

You can rent a camper van in Erfurt at any time of year, but the spring, summer, and fall months are ideal for extended hikes, nature observation, and outdoor activities.

Between April and September, the weather is pleasantly mild, nature is in full bloom, and the temperatures are warm enough for outdoor pursuits. In April, consider visiting the Erfurt Spring Festival, and in June, enjoy the Krämerbrücken Festival, the largest Old Town festival in Thuringia.
