Hire a camper and be charmed by Faro

Whitewashed alleys, mosaic floors on the pedestrian streets and colourful jacaranda trees that sprinkle the city with their purple blossom in spring and summer – Faro is truly a treat for those romantic at heart. The gleaming white old town of Vila Adentro is surrounded by medieval city walls and can be accessed through three gates. The Arco da Vila city gate is a real eye-catcher and a landmark of the city from the 18th century. The Arco de Repouso city gate connects old Faro with the port. Translated, it roughly means “Gate of rest” and is called this because it is said that King D. Alfonso III. rested here during the conquest of Faro. Very symbolic, as this city cannot be perturbed by anything. The list of sights is a small one, but well worth exploring.

Be a culture vulture in Faro

In the archaeological museum, you’ll stare in astonishment at an ocean mosaic from the 3rd century. At Largo de Sé, the central square in Faro, you’ll find the cathedral built in the 13th and 14th century. The chapels of the cathedral are richly adorned with colourful tiles and wood carvings, only one of them is the odd one out – it’s a real gruesome beauty. The Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) was made from the bones and skulls of Carmelite monks who had passed away. It sounds a little morbid, but it is actually a memorial and much less creepy than it sounds. It is definitely worth visiting the chapel. In contrast, you will find thriving life in the pedestrian street of Rua de Santo António. This is the most popular zone of the city with plenty of restaurants and shops. You can enjoy a stroll through the streets draped with awnings even in the hot summer months.

Discover the magnificent sandbanks of Faro

The best sights of all can be found in the great outdoors. It’s really convenient that you can hire your roadsurfer in Faro to explore the beautiful surroundings of the city. Regardless of which mode of travel you prefer, you can explore the Ria Formosa on foot, bike, boat or kayak. And you will certainly be impressed. The diversity of flora and fauna is inexhaustible in this protected area. Each year, more than 20,000 migratory birds make a stopover on their journey between Northern Europe and Africa. But it’s not just the hobby bird spotters among us whose faces will light up behind the SLR camera. Because one or more rare birds, which are not necessarily always birds, like to look around here.

The Portuguese Water Dog has become world famous

One of them even made a name for himself in his water dog life and moved into the White House with the Obamas as the so-called “First Dog”.
