Best time of year to visit Los Angeles

You can enjoy a visit to Los Angeles year-round as the weather stays relatively comfortable. The summers can get quite hot, especially when camping away from the Pacific coast, so take that time for a relaxing couples beachside getaway or a more adrenaline-fueled surfing adventure with a close friend. Because of the extreme inland summer heat, roadsurfer camper van and Class C RV rentals are prohibited from visiting Death Valley except during the winter. Winters in LA are never really cold, but mountains like the stunning Sierra Nevadas, home to Yosemite National Park, can get much colder so plan your road trip accordingly. Spring and Autumn are the best times of year for a visit as the temperatures are comfortable, and the national parks are less crowded. If you plan on a longer road trip to other states, make sure to check their current requirements, like snow chains, which are not provided.

Filling and emptying water tanks in Los Angeles

When setting off on your journey, locating water fill-up stations for your camper van within the city of Los Angeles can be challenging. Once you are beyond the city limit, it will be much easier finding such stations. When returning your camper van or Class C RV rental, you must empty your black and grey water. The nearest service station is a short 15-minute drive away, where you can dispose of your grey water tank. Please note that this station has limited operating hours, typically open for only 2-3 hours per day.

  • Hyperion Dump Station, 7660 West Imperial Highway, Playa Del Rey, CA 90293

Due to the limited operating hours, we recommend staying at a campground that provides those facilities before finishing your road trip.

Gas stations near our Los Angeles station

Pease ensure the fuel tank is topped up shortly before returning your RV rental. Depending on the camper model, petrol or diesel and DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) are required. Please check in advance which fuel your camper requires. Failure to return the tanks full may result in a service fee. DEF is available at most Walmart and Target locations. These are the closest gas stations near our location:

  • MOBIL, 4750 W Rosecrans Ave, Hawthorne, CA. 90250
  • 76 Gas Station, 4773 W El Segundo Blvd, Hawthorne, CA 90250

Parking in Los Angeles

There is street parking available, but with regular street sweeping on Mondays and Tuesdays, it’s not the best option and not the safest. If you are looking to park your vehicle while you are on your roadsurfer adventure, you can find many long-term parking options at the Los Angeles International Airport, which is just a 15-minute taxi or ride-sharing car ride from our Los Angeles station.

Last-minute essentials in Los Angeles

Make sure to stock up on any last-minute essentials before hitting the road. If you are looking for groceries, there are several Ralphs grocery stores located within a 5 to 10-minute drive of the Los Angeles station. You can also find several Trader Joe’s around the greater Los Angeles area. For other general supplies, Walmart and Target are just down the road. It should be easy to find whatever you need around Los Angeles.

Coffee shops near our Los Angeles station

If you are in need of a bit of caffeine and food after your long travel journey before setting out on your roadsurfer adventure, there is a delicious French bakery and café called Le Pain Du Jour Bakery across the street from the Los Angeles station. It’s a great place to pick up some croissants and coffee to enjoy right away or take with you on the road.

Campgrounds near Los Angeles

There are plenty of campground possibilities near Los Angeles once you get just outside the city. If you plan on driving along the Pacific Coast Highway, you can escape the big city by staying at Malibu Creek Campsite in Malibu Creek State Park or Malibu Beach RV Park which is just off the PCH with stunning views of the pacific ocean, or stay within walking distance of the beach at Leo Carrillo State Park Campground. If you prefer to go hiking on trails like the Pacific Crest Trail, you can try Buckhorn Campground, or Manker Flats Campground, in Angeles National Forest. If a Disneyland visit is more your style, check out Anaheim Harbor RV Park. There are so many campgrounds to choose from but here are a few more we recommend:

  • Dockweiler RV Park – panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean from Malibu to Catalina Island, plus great amenities and entertainment
  • Bonelli Bluffs RV Resort and Campground – near San Dimas and Lake Puddington Reservoir with beautiful mountain views
  • Rancho Oso RV and Camping Resort – beautiful scenery near Santa Barbara with a wide variety of entertainment activities
  • Sycamore Canyon Campground – no shortage of things to do in Point Magu State Park, from relaxing on the beach, hiking and mountain biking routes, as well as a 200-foot sand dune

Please be aware that campgrounds in and around Los Angeles, as well as throughout California, can become fully booked during peak seasons. To secure your desired campsite, we highly recommend making reservations up to 6 months in advance. This will ensure that you have the best chances of securing a spot for your road trip adventure.
