From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS): From the airport, take the Intercity/Sprinter to “Station Zuid”. Change to tram 25 and get off at “Amstelveen, Sacharovlaan”. From here, it’s a 3-minute walk to the roadsurfer station.

Your campervan comes with an awning, camping table and two chairs to enjoy the space outside of your vehicle. The kitchen box allows you to save money on eating out: you’ve got all the pots, pans, and utensils to cook up your own meals. There’s even a corkscrew and bottle opener, and a cafetière plus mugs for your morning coffee or tea, although you’ll want to bring dish towels, sponges, and eco-friendly dish soap. When you rent a small motorhome from Amsterdam you will need to bring your own bedding, or you can hire what you need from the station. Best time to hire a campervan in Amsterdam

Spring and late summer are beautiful in the Netherlands, making the best months to hire a campervan in Amsterdam April, May and September. You’ll also find the Tulip Festival and National Restaurant Week in April, while September hosts the city’s Fringe Festival. In the summer months, the hours of sunshine increase, but so do the crowds. In November, January and February, you’ll find fewer tourists and great prices, perfect for those on a budget.

You’ll need to fill up the freshwater tank at the beginning of your trip, and empty your grey water at the end. This can be done at a campsite, but if you need a dedicated area, Amsterdam has one of the only motorhome services in the Netherlands where you can do both of these tasks.

Parking in Amsterdam

When you hire a campervan in Amsterdam you’ll find that parking in the city centre is expensive and doesn’t always accommodate the size of your vehicle. Amsterdam has a great park and ride system, and if you park after 10am and begin your return journey in the city centre zone, you’ll be entitled to discounted parking of €1 for the day plus the cost of your travel card.   • Parkeerplaats, Europaboulevard, Amsterdam – this is not a P+R venue, which will be useful if you don’t want to go into the city centre. Take the tram from Drentepark tram stop, around a five-minute walk. Parking is free on weekends and public holidays but otherwise €2.50 per hour.

Wondering where to buy food and other essentials when you pick up your motorhome rental in Amsterdam? There are several supermarkets close to the roadsurfer station, as well as a shopping centre which has a HEMA department store for forgotten essentials, clothing shops, and a sports shop. There are also places to get food and drink. The Dutch version of a drug store – like Boots in the UK or a French pharmacy – is a chain called Etos, although if you need a pharmacy for medication, you’ll need to find an ‘apoteek’.
