The Hermannsweg is a famous long-distance hiking trail that runs through the Teutoburg Forest and offers beautiful viewpoints. You can go climbing or swimming in Extertal. Bielefeld also offers cultural highlights such as the impressive Sparrenburg Castle and the Kunsthalle Bielefeld art gallery. Here are a few more tips to help you plan your road trip in Germany.
You can begin your road trip as soon as you pick up your keys in Bielefeld, trusting that your roadsurfer home on wheels is fully stocked. Your campervan comes with an awning, camping table and two chairs to enjoy the space outside of your vehicle. The kitchen box allows you to save money on eating out: you’ve got all the pots, pans, and utensils to cook up your own meals. There’s even a corkscrew and bottle opener, and a coffee pot, plus mugs for your morning coffee or tea, although you’ll want to bring dish towels, sponges, and eco-friendly dish soap. When you rent a small motorhome from Bielefeld you will need to bring your own bedding, or you can hire what you need from the roadsurfer station. Full details of what’s included in your motorhome hire, and our suggestions on what to bring along to your Bielefeld campervan holiday can be found in the equipment list.
The best time to hire a campervan in Bielefeld is during spring and summer. From March to May, temperatures gradually rise, and the weather is often sunny, making it an ideal time for walks through the city’s green spaces, parks, and outdoor activities. From June to August, temperatures are pleasantly warm to hot, and there are numerous summer festivals and events in the city.
For those who prefer to avoid the high season, starting a campervan trip from Bielefeld in the autumn is still a good option. During this time, temperatures are often mild, and the landscape is adorned with warm autumn colours. It’s an excellent time for hikes in the surrounding natural areas or cultural explorations in the city. Winter in Bielefeld can be cool to cold, and it may also snow. If you enjoy winter sports, you can go skiing or snowboarding in the area around Bielefeld or explore the Christmas markets in the city.
You’ll want to fill up the fresh water tank of your campervan or motorhome hire at the beginning of your trip, and empty your grey water at the end. The best place to do this is at your campsite if they offer these services, or at certain petrol stations. We recommend the following address (it’s only 15 minutes away from the station):
Before you return your roadsurfer campervan, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue (can be refilled at the Ad Blue truck fuel pump) at this convenient petrol station near our location:

Bielefeld also has several park-and-ride lots, such as the one directly at the main train station, which are ideal for travellers who want to continue their journey by train.
