  • Americans can visit Italy and other Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.
  • You must have a valid U.S. passport; it’s recommended that your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.
  • Border officials may ask for proof of onward travel or a return ticket, confirmation of accommodation, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay.
  • Italy is part of the Schengen Area, allowing easy travel between member countries during your stay.
  • Starting in 2025, Americans will need ETIAS approval to enter Italy and other Schengen countries. Be sure to apply online before your trip once ETIAS is in effect.

RV Parking in Bologna

If you plan to explore Bologna before embarking on your road trip, navigating parking in the city can be a challenge. Similar to many medieval Italian cities, the entire historic center is a ZTL, restricting transit without a special permit. To assist you, we’ve compiled a list of parking options just outside the city center, perfect for parking your RV rental for a few hours while you explore on foot:

  • Parcheggio Tanari at 17 Luigi Tanari Street: A few minutes from downtown, this parking is free when used with a bus ticket. Display your bus ticket to the staff to avoid parking fees (max. 24 hours).
  • Parcheggio Staveco at Viale Enrico Panzacchi 10: Paid parking but very convenient for a quick walk to downtown. Note that parking is not guaranteed on busy days and weekends.
  • Parcheggio Antistadio at Via Andrea Costa: This parking is free with a public transportation pass but is farther from the center (3 km on foot or 15 minutes with bus lines 14 or 21).

Nearby Gas Stations

Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:

  • IP Gas Station, Via Nuova Bazzenese-SS 569 N. Snc, 40132 Casteldebole BO (Offers diesel and AdBlue, with self-service available for both.)

Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.

Water Tank Info

You’ll want to fill up the fresh water tank of your camper van or RV rental at the beginning of your trip, and empty your grey water at the end. The best place to do this is at your campground if they offer these services, or at certain gas stations. Near our station you can also find this address to fill up the freshwater tank:

  • Via del Savena, 17/3, 40065 Pianoro BO (Free access to both fresh water and a dumping station.)

Best Time to Visit Bologna

Bologna’s timeless beauty welcomes visitors year-round, but the best times for camper van rentals are spring (April-June) and late summer (September-October). During these seasons, you can enjoy the city without the discomfort of sweltering heat or crowds of tourists. Explore the renowned Colli Bolognesi on a bicycle tour, which you can pair with a delightful food and wine experience, creating unforgettable memories.

Cultural richness abounds in Bologna throughout the year. In June, you can immerse yourself in the world of biopics at Biografilm, an international film festival. Enjoy open-air evenings and a diverse array of films at Sotto le Stelle del Cinema, a summer event in Piazza Maggiore featuring movie screenings and interviews with industry figures. As fall arrives, the roBOt Festival (October) and the Bologna Jazz Festival (November) infuse the city with a variety of musical rhythms, catering to all tastes.
