What driving licence do you need to drive a campervan or motorhome?

To drive a roadsurfer campervan, you need a standard class B driving license. If you are hiring a campervan or motorhome in the UK, Ireland, Canada, or the U.S., you must be at least 21 years old and have possessed your driving licence for more than one year. Renting and driving in the UK

Yes, you can rent and drive an RV in the UK with your valid, regular driver’s license, no special license required.

  • Your license must be current and allow you to drive vehicles up to 3.5 tons.

A driving licence check is mandatory when picking up your vehicle at any of our UK stations. To be eligible to drive our vehicles, your licence must have no more than six penalty points.

Yes, we accept official temporary or provisional licenses if your regular license is lost or expired.

  • Please bring all supporting documents you received with your temporary license.

Yes, additional drivers are allowed as long as they meet the same license requirements as the main renter.

Taking your license abroad

UK licences, are widely accepted across Europe, often without the need for an international permit.
Below is a breakdown of where your licence is valid and what to consider.

  • UK driving licences (even after Brexit) are still accepted in the EU/EEA.
  • EU and EEA licences are also valid, without needing an international driving permit, in Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the UK, Serbia, Switzerland, and Albania.

An international driving licence is necessary if the driving licence is not issued in a member state of the European Union (EU) or a state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA).
