Best time to hire a campervan in Regensburg

The best time to hire a campervan in Regensburg is summer, just like in the rest of Germany. June to August is the most popular time to travel, as the weather is usually warm and sunny. It’s also the best time to swim in the many Bavarian lakes or take a boat trip on the Danube. Every two years in June, Regensburg also hosts the Bürgerfest, which is definitely worth a visit, as the whole city comes alive with concerts, food stalls and events in the city centre and along the banks of the Danube. The annual Jazz Festival also takes place in June.

Spring and autumn are also good times to visit Regensburg and the surrounding area, as this is when nature is at its most colourful. Excursions and hikes and other outdoor activities around the city are perfect at this time thanks to the mild temperatures. It can get very foggy in the countryside around Regensburg because of its proximity to the Danube, so you should drive carefully and always switch on your fog lights. In winter, there are beautiful Christmas markets such as the Christmas market at Haidplatz, the Lucrezia market at Kohlenmarkt or the fairytale Christmas market at Thurn und Taxis Castle.

Parking in Regensburg

There are several parking options in Regensburg and it’s not too difficult to find a parking space. We recommend that you use one of the following options.

  • Car parks and underground garages: Regensburg has several car parks and underground garages in the city centre. The best known include the multi-storey car park at Dachauplatz, the Petersweg multi-storey car park, the underground car park at Arnulfsplatz and the Regensburg-Arcaden multi-storey car park at the main railway station. These are often convenient options for safely parking your campervan rental and exploring the city centre. Please also check the height restrictions before entering a carpark.
  • Parking on the outskirts of the city: There are some car parks near the city centre that often offer cheaper rates. If you park in the Wöhrdstraße car park, for example, you only have to walk across the Eiserne Brücke bridge and you’re already in the old town.
  • Park & Ride: Regensburg offers several Park & Ride facilities where you can park your car outside the city centre and then take public transport into the city centre. You can find P&R car parks at the university, Königswiesen, Ostentor, Burgweinting or in Furtmayrstraße. From there you can take the bus to the city centre.
  • Mobile apps and digital payment: In many multi-storey car parks and public car parks in Regensburg, the parking fee can be paid by mobile phone or via special parking apps such as Easypark, ParkNow or HandyParken. This is a practical and easy option.
