Your Florida Road Trip

Rent your RV in Florida and take advantage of unlimited mileage, from Miami’s South Beach and Biscayne Bay to Orlando’s theme parks or even a drive along the Atlantic shoreline toward the Keys. A free second driver makes it easy to trade off on long stretches through the Everglades or over the Seven Mile Bridge on our Florida Keys road trip. 24/7 roadside assistance gives peace of mind whether you’re exploring St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos, navigating Orlando traffic near Disney World, or crossing to the Gulf Coast. Driving rules in Florida

A road trip through Florida means sunshine, palm trees, and tropical vibes—but it also requires a small shift in mindset, since traffic laws can differ from what you might be used to. No worries—these tips will help you stay safe and relaxed on the road:

  • You can turn right at a red light after coming to a complete stop—unless a sign says otherwise.
  • At four-way stop signs, the rule is first come, first go.
  • You must stop for school buses that are picking up or dropping off kids—even if you’re coming from the opposite direction.
  • On multi-lane roads, you can pass on either side, and others can pass you from both sides—stay alert.
  • Open alcoholic beverages must be stored in the trunk. Anywhere else is illegal.
  • Gas stations in Florida require prepayment: If you’re paying cash, go inside first and tell the cashier the amount you want to prepay. If you’re using a card, you’ll pay at the pump—also before fueling.
  • Toll roads are marked with signs and are usually billed automatically via your license plate.
  • Heavy rain can hit fast, especially during the wet season. If visibility drops, safely pull over and wait it out. Always turn on your headlights when driving in the rain.

Camping in Florida

Florida’s subtropical climate and our modern RVs make camping possible all year long—warm summers, mild winters, and plenty of sunshine invite you to live outdoors. With over 900 camping spots across the state, you’ll always find the perfect place to park—whether it’s in the Everglades, at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys, or near the family-friendly camping spot at Walt Disney World. Florida’s variety of camping spots is just as vibrant as the state itself. During peak season, it’s a good idea to book early, as the most popular spots fill up fast.

Travel requirements for your Florida road trip

To enter the U.S., your passport should be valid for the entire duration of your stay—ideally for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Don’t forget to apply for your ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) at least 72 hours before departure via the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection site. With ESTA approval, you can visit the U.S. for up to 90 days without a visa. If you’re planning to rent an RV in Florida, we also recommend carrying an International Driving Permit. It’s not mandatory, but it’s a helpful backup to have with you—just in case. For more details about driving requirements, see the U.S. Department of State travel page on driving and road safety.

Best Time to Visit Florida

Florida is a dream destination year-round—but the Sunshine State truly shines between November and May. While winter chills hit elsewhere, you’ll find mild temperatures and sunny days here. Peak season runs from December to February, making it the perfect escape for those chasing the sun—or even celebrating the holidays under palm trees. From June to September, it’s hurricane and rainy season, but that doesn’t mean constant storms. In fact, you’ll often find better prices, fewer crowds, and plenty of beautiful weather along the way.

Palm trees sway against the glowing Miami skyline at sunset, marking the perfect starting or ending point for a Florida East Coast road trip.
