How do campervan returns work?

Returning your roadsurfer campervan is straightforward, but there are a few important steps to follow. This page covers where and when to return your campervan, cleaning requirements, refuelling, and what to expect during the return process.

Where, when, and how to return

You can find the return checklist in your customer account two days before your return date. Follow each step to prepare your camper and complete the return process smoothly.

  • The return checklist covers cleaning, emptying tanks, refilling fluids, disposal station information, and other required preparation tasks
  • You can change your return time in your customer account up to two days before drop-off
  • On return day, complete digital check-in before handing over your keys at the station
  • Your camper will receive an initial return check, with final inspection details and any updates available afterward in your customer account
  • Be on time – your customer account shows your exact drop-off time and location

For a complete overview, including checklists and photos, please see our return guide in the help center.

When you arrive at your return station, log in to your customer account to begin the digital return process.

  • You can log in by scanning the QR code at the Welcome Point or by clicking the link in your return reminder email
  • Complete the digital check-in steps before handing over your keys
  • Once you select “Sign up for return,” staff will be notified that your camper is ready for the initial return check
  • Follow any final instructions in your customer account to complete the handover process

Hand over your keys to a staff member for the initial return check, where your camper will be reviewed for cleanliness and visible condition.

  • The initial check may take up to 20 minutes, depending on station traffic
  • You’ll receive return results and documentation in your customer account
  • A more detailed inspection may take place after drop-off, with any damage findings or deposit updates communicated later through your account
  • On busy days, short waiting times are possible, so please allow extra time for the full return process

Cleaning & preparing your campervan

Yes, please return the campervan with the interior as clean as it was at pick-up.

  • Wipe down surfaces, clean the kitchen area, empty the fridge, and sweep the floor.
  • Find a full list of cleaning tasks in your return checklist in your customer account.
  • Additional cleaning fees may apply if the interior is very dirty, if you bring animals without booking them, or if you smoke in the campervan. See all fees in our cleaning fees PDF.

You are required to remove any heavy dirt from the windshield and bumper before you drop off the campervan. However, do not wash the entire exterior.

  • A full wash is not necessary and could damage the pop-up roof or vehicle wrapping.
  • You can find free cleaning equipment for the windshield and bumper at most diesel stations.
  • For more details, check your return checklist to see what needs to be cleaned before drop-off.

Yes, please stop at a disposal station to empty the grey water tank and toilet before your return.

Yes, please fill up the fuel tank and any required consumables before your return.

  • In Europe, this means diesel and AdBlue. In North America, it’s petrol or diesel, propane gas, and DEF if required. You’ll find the exact requirements in your return checklist.
  • You can find recommended gas stations near your return station in your return checklist or on our fuel station list.
