Rent your campervan in Bilbao, and live an adventure full of emotions. From cultural day trips, the best of Basque gastronomy, to surfing or relaxing on one of the many beaches that the gorgeous Basque Country coast has to offer. Read on below for our top tips on hiring a motorhome in Bilbao.
When you rent a campervan in Bilbao you can be on the road right away, trusting that your roadsurfer home on wheels is fully stocked. Your campervan comes with an awning, camping table and two chairs to enjoy the space outside of your vehicle. The kitchen box allows you to save money on eating out: you’ve got all the pots, pans, and utensils to cook up your own meals. There’s even a corkscrew and bottle opener, and a cafetière plus mugs for your morning coffee or tea, although you’ll want to bring dish towels, sponges, and eco-friendly dish soap. When you rent a small motorhome from Bilbao you will need to bring your own bedding, or you can hire what you need from the station. Full details of what’s included and our suggestions on what to bring along to your Bilbao campervan holiday can be found in the equipment list.
The best time to rent a campervan in Bilbao is undoubtedly in summer. Of course, there will be tourists, but it will be much fewer than in cities like Barcelona or Valencia. In Bilbao, during the summer months, it is pleasantly warm to travel and enjoy the diverse mountain and beach landscapes of the Basque Country.
In autumn and winter, temperatures drop considerably, and there can be long periods of rain, but this does not mean that Northern Spain is not worth visiting. In winter, you can visit museums, stroll through the Christmas markets, enjoy a few pintxos in the bars and even, weather permitting, go hiking in the mountains.
The advantage of hiring a motorhome in Bilbao in the low season is that prices are lower and there is a larger selection of vehicles available.
You’ll have to empty the grey water and wastewater before returning your campervan rental to the roadsurfer station in Bilbao. This cannot be emptied just anywhere, so we have found a few nearby addresses for you:
You can fill up with diesel and AdBlue at the following petrol station near the roadsurfer Bilbao rental station:

Bilbao’s paid parking zones are controlled by the OTA service and are divided into blue zones (maximum 2 hours parking) and green zones (maximum 5 hours parking).
There are also other paid parking options in Bilbao such as the so-called deterrent zones (usually at metro stations or train stations), designed to relieve congestion in the city centre. These are generally a cheaper parking alternative.
If you want to visit Bilbao after picking up your campervan rental, and don’t want the hassle of worrying about parking times, try one of the car parks on the outskirts of the city, such as Deusto, Zurbarán or Txurdinaga, and access the city centre by public transport.
You don’t have to register a toll system for your roadsurfer vehicle when you drive in Spain, and you can decide whether to use a toll-free motorway or a (private) toll road.
The private ones are marked with an “R” or “AP” and a toll sign on the traffic signs. Toll roads can be paid at the toll booth by credit card or cash. Please pay attention and do not drive through the “Telepeaje” booths, as those are only for cars with a transponder installed. You can check which ones are toll roads and how much they cost here.
After picking up your campervan rental in Bilbao, you will be able to travel along the Cantabrian coast, a dream for many. For your journey north, we recommend stopping at one of roadsurfer spots, unique private places to camp, and enjoying the local produce and outdoor activities they offer. Find your favourite camping spot in Northern Spain!
