Kiel is a maritime city characterised by urban flair and a unique laid-back lifestyle. This makes it the perfect city for everyone to explore. Whether you’re planning to spend a day by the beach, find your sailing legs out on the water, or head into the heart of the city and explore its many independent shops, cosy cafés and historic buildings.
But to see the city at its best, we recommend visiting during one of the city’s many festivals. Having hosted everything from Kiel Week, Europe’s largest annual sailing festival, to the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, there really is something for everyone.
When you hire a motorhome in Kiel, you’re only a short drive from Lake Plön, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, and Holstein Switzerland, a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. Kiel is also the gateway to Scandinavia – with ferries running daily to Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
Kiel is a charming city that delights year-round, so figuring out the best time to visit will depend on your preferences.
Spring sees the city coming into life with the reopening of the popular Seebar, which sits right on the Fjord and is the perfect place to enjoy traditional Anbaden (the first dip of the season). But it is during the spring festival ‘Kiel blossoms’ at the end of April when the city really comes to life with family-friendly crafts and outdoor activities.
In summer, you can enjoy long, sunny days lazing by the many beaches or experience the city’s incredible summer festivals, like Kiel Week in June, Europe’s largest sailing event. While throughout August, you can enjoy live music in the harbour every Friday and Saturday afternoon.
For those seeking winter adventures, the Kiel Sea of Lights festival is a must-visit event. With ten light installations guiding you through the city accompanied by impressive live acts, it is a unique spectacle sure to delight. Or, to get in the festive spirit, why not visit one of the city’s many Christmas markets or the Stadtwerke Ice Festival?

You can park a motorhome or campervan in public spaces as long as you don’t block traffic or the pavement, and any parking restrictions are usually clearly signposted. However, if you’re looking for a carpark, we recommend the below spots:
Bella Viste motorhome parking space at Scheerhafen: Located directly on the waterfront, with breathtaking views of the harbour, this is the perfect starting point for exploring Kiel.
Koesterallee car park: You can park here from May to September for just €10 per day, and many of the city’s key sights are within easy reach.
Solingen car park: Parking near the Olympic Centre is available but can be limited during major events and Kiel Week.

Uncovering natural wonders: The Lebrade Pond Bird Sanctuary and Tiergehege Hammer Wildlife Park are both within an easy drive of Kiel city centre and offer the perfect respite from busy days exploring the city.
Discovering city sights: Must-visit sights for families include the Zoological Museum and Aquarium, but you can also explore a German U-Boat or just enjoy watching all the ships pass through Kieler Canal.
