Travel Tips for Your Southern Portugal Road Trip

Driving in southern Portugal is safe and straightforward, but there are some important rules to follow.

  • Always carry your driver’s license, ID/passport, and proof of insurance.
  • Drive on the right, obey posted speed limits, and never use your phone while driving.
  • Toll roads are common and often use an electronic payment system—official road updates and payment details are available from the Portuguese Road Authority.

Wild camping is tightly regulated in southern Portugal, especially in coastal and protected areas.

  • It is officially prohibited in most of the Algarve and national parks, and fines are common—always double-check with the Algarve Tourism Board for the latest rules.
  • Use only designated camping spots or official areas for overnight stays.
  • Local tourism offices can advise on alternatives if wild camping is not permitted.

For the latest travel advisories and emergency contacts, always check official government sources before your trip.

  • General travel info and up-to-date advisories are available on the Visit Portugal website.
  • For real-time alerts on wildfires and severe weather, consult the Civil Protection Service.
  • In an emergency, dial 112 for police, fire, or ambulance assistance in Portugal.

For accurate forecasts and fire alerts, check the official Portuguese weather service at IPMA – Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere.

  • Find real-time weather and wildfire warnings on their site, updated daily.
  • Plan ahead, especially during summer when wildfire risk is higher.

Most travelers only need a valid ID/passport and driver’s license, but some non-EU visitors may need extra documentation—always check the latest entry requirements from the Portuguese Immigration & Borders Service.

  • EU/EEA citizens: Valid ID and driver’s license are enough.
  • Non-EU visitors: Bring your passport and confirm if you need an International Driving Permit.
  • Always carry your rental agreement if traveling by RV.
