It costs only very little time to reach the centre. If you pick up your campervan directly in Porto you can first explore the city and then set off on a road trip through Portugal.

5 Highlights in Porto

#1 Traditional Port wine

The city on the Atlantic has given its name to the legendary port wine. The fruity-sweet liqueur wine belongs to Porto like beer belongs to Bavaria, so no visit to Porto without having tasted it. If the ruby red wine is too sweet for you, you can try Portonic, the cult drink of Porto. White or rosé port is topped up with tonic water, which makes a refreshing long drink.

#2 Eléctrico:

Porto’s tram rattle through the city with a squeaky sound and exude pure nostalgia. Three lines conquer the steep hills of Porto. Linha 1 runs along the banks of the River Douro to the charming district of Foz and is particularly popular. During the day it can get very crowded in the wagons of this line, so we recommend that you take the tram in the morning or evening if possible, as it is much quieter.

#3 Teleférico de Gaia:

The cable car connects the Douro promenade with the Jardim do Morro park and offers a view over the warehouses of the port wine cellars. During the leisurely gondola ride, enjoy the view over the deeply incised valley of the Douro and its medieval Ribeira quarter on the riverbank.

#4 Portos historic houses and their colourful paintings:

Azulejos, Art Nouveau and colourful flowers. The numerous churches of Porto are decorated with artistically painted blue and white tiles (the azulejos), but in general Portos house facades are a spectacle of art. Many nostalgic shops in the old town are embellished with Art Nouveau motifs and in Rua de Flores, flowers adorn an entire house wall.

#5 Pastéis de Nata e Expresso:

Pastéis de Nata are puff pastry tartlets with pudding, originally from Lisbon. They were probably made before the 18th century. A real traditional pastry, therefore, which has long been representative of the whole of Portugal. The small, strong, black coffee is written with an “x” in Portuguese and is served in Porto in one of the countless cafés. The combination makes an indispensable must-have for an afternoon in Porto.

#1 Romantic Douro Valley

The Douro River has its source in the Spanish province of Soria and finally flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Porto. The romantic Douro valley is best explored by campervan from Porto. The hills of the Douro are the growing area for the famous port wine, behind every bend a new viewpoint awaits you. Hire your campervan in Porto now and enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the Douro.

#2 The campsites around Porto

One hour or less:

The camping site Orbitur Rio Alto Park is situated just 45 km north of Porto and its open all year round. You can jump straight into the sea here at any time – thanks to its direct access to the beach. For a change you can take a dip in the pool or play tennis on the sports field. A special extra: the campers’ kitchen can also take a break here, as the campsite even has a restaurant – pure luxury.

In the village of Garfe (north-east of Porto) there is the campsite GarfePark Camping. Holidaying on the privately run, rural campsite means swimming in the pool and walking in the shade of the oaks. As it only has a capacity for 30 pitches, this campsite may fit only if you are looking for a quiet and a family atmosphere.

Under two hours:

The campsite Orbitur Gala is located almost exactly between Porto and Lisbon. As it is situated in the middle of the forest of Mata de Lavos, the trees will give you and your campervan plenty of shade. The extensive beach of Figuera de Foz is only 400 metres away. Serra de Boa Viagem is the name of a range of hills a little further north of the campsite. You can go hiking here and enjoy the nature. By the way, in English the range of hills is called “Hill of Good Journey”.

#3 Rota do Românico

The route through the Romanesque period is a route past 58 buildings of Romanesque architecture. Only in the region between Porto and Vila Real are there these characteristic monasteries, churches, bridges, castles and towers. This sight is made for you and your camper. Because after you have picked it up in Porto, you can drive off the monuments at a leisurely pace and have the opportunity to take a picnic break at any time.

City trip and beach holiday in one – from Porto everything is possible. So rent your campervan in Porto now and become a happy roadsurfer in Portugal.
