Best time of year to visit Bilbao

The ideal time to rent a camper van in Bilbao is undoubtedly during the summer. While there will still be tourists, the numbers are much lower compared to cities like Barcelona or Valencia. In Bilbao, you can experience pleasantly warm weather during the summer months, making it an excellent time to explore the diverse mountain and beach landscapes of the Basque Country.

During fall and winter, temperatures significantly drop, and long periods of rain are common. However, this doesn’t mean that northern Spain is not worth a visit. In winter, you can enjoy visiting museums, strolling through the Christmas markets, savoring pintxos in the bars, and even, weather permitting, embark on mountain hikes. The benefit of renting a camper van in Bilbao during the low season is that prices are lower, and there’s a wider selection of available vehicles.

Filling and emptying water tanks in Bilbao

You’ll need to empty the black water and grey water before returning your camper van rental to the roadsurfer station in Bilbao. Black water cannot be emptied just anywhere. Here are some of the most convenient disposal locations:

  • Barrio Arteaga Auzoa, 66G, 48170 Zamudio (You can also fill up with fresh water here)
  • Goikola Auzoa, 15, 48195 Larrabetzu

Gas stations near our Bilbao station

Before you return your roadsurfer camper van, you can refill with diesel and AdBlue at one of these convenient gas stations near our location here:

  • BP, Egirleta Errepidea, 20, Alto, 48015 Bilbao, Biscay

Please note: The AdBlue service station information provided is for guidance only and is provided without warranty of any kind; customers are advised to check the information for accuracy on their own responsibility, as roadsurfer assumes no liability for the accuracy or timeliness of the information.

Parking in Bilbao

Bilbao’s paid parking zones are controlled by the OTA service and are divided into blue zones (maximum 2-hour parking) and green zones (maximum 5-hour parking).

There are also other paid parking options in Bilbao such as the so-called deterrent zones (usually at metro stations or train stations), designed to relieve congestion in the city center. These are generally cheaper parking alternatives.

If you want to visit Bilbao after picking up your camper van rental and don’t want the hassle of worrying about parking times, try one of the car parks on the outskirts of the city, such as Deusto, Zurbarán or Txurdinaga, and access the city center by public transit.

Paying tolls in Spain

You don’t have to register a toll system for your roadsurfer vehicle when you drive in Spain, and you can decide whether to use a toll-free highway or a private toll road.

The private roads are marked with an “R” or “AP” and a toll on the traffic signs. Toll roads can be paid at the toll booth by credit card or cash. Please pay attention and do not drive through the “Telepeaje” booths, as those are only for cars with a transponder installed. You can check which ones are toll roads and how much they cost here.
