England with a Campervan – What you have to pay attention to while driving

  • Very important: In the UK, traffic drives on the left. That’s why you also have to remember that your headlights have to be adjusted for left-hand traffic if you are driving a European roadsurfer.
  • The speed limit is 30 mph (48 km/h) in built-up areas, 60 mph 96 km/h (96 km/h) outside of built-up areas, and 70 mph (112 km/h) on dual carriageways and the motorway for small mobile homes. Please note that the speed in the country is shown in mph (miles per hour).
  • The blood alcohol limit is 0.8 and in Scotland it is 0.5.
  • There is absolutely no parking or stopping at a double yellow line and no parking is allowed when there is a yellow or red line at the side of the road. A temporary parking ban is indicated with a dashed yellow line.
  • Children under the age of 12 and under 1.35 m must travel in an appropriate child seat.
  • You are only allowed to make phone calls while driving if you are using a hands-free device. Beware of distractions while driving – music that is too loud, eating at the wheel, etc. are punishable with high fines.
  • If you pay a fine within 14 days, you get a 50% discount on some traffic offences.

With a campervan through the UK – tips & costs for your tour

There are numerous campsites for you and your camper. Scotland is home to many campgrounds and dedicated motor vehicle camping areas for outdoor adventurers.

Thinking about taking advantage of wild camping in the UK? Get to know the ins and outs of wild camping with our roadsurfer wild camping guide and ensure you’re following the regulations on your adventure.

Most motorways are free to use. However, you have to pay tolls on some sections and for several tunnels and bridges. Also factor in the congestion charge when you drive to London. The so-called “congestion charge” applies from 7am to 10pm and costs £15 per day.

To get to England with a campervan, you have to take the ferry. The Calais to Dover ferry costs around €125 for 2 people plus a small campervan depending on the season. The crossing takes about 90 minutes.

Accommodation prices can be a bit higher, especially during peak summer and holiday periods, and it’s well worth booking in advance. This is especially true if you want to travel to popular holiday destinations like Brighton.

If you are travelling in the national parks or the Scottish Highlands in winter, you must pay attention to the weather forecast, as snow can quickly make many roads impassable.
