How to get to Rotterdam

You can either take a plane to Rotterdam-Den Haag airport or a train via Amsterdam – you can be there in just one hour. If you come by train, take your time to say hello to the Central Station, which is considered one of the coolest stations in Europe and will get you in the mood for the city’s architectural wonders.

If you have picked up your camper and are driving into town, the best place to park it is the New Luxor Theatre – day tickets cost around 30 euros in the city’s car parks. Alternatively, you should leave your campervan at the campsite and use public transport. Or you could do the same as the locals and cycle, as is customary in the Netherlands.

roadsurfer tip: If you prefer to explore the city by jogging, you will be happy to know that Rotterdam has markings all over the city for various running routes.

Sightseeing in Rotterdam

Hotel New York

Thanks to the comfortable beds in our campervans, you don’t need a hotel room, but you should still visit the Hotel New York. The hotel is located in the old headquarters of the Holland-Amerika Lijn, from where travel enthusiasts used to set off on their trip to a new life in America. Today, the former bus stop shelter houses a beautiful restaurant that will delight fans of architecture. From the hotel you can stroll along the Wilhelmina Pier and admire the skyline of Rotterdam.

Architecture in Rotterdam

This skyline is something very special and many artists and architects have worked here over the years. One of the highlights are the cube houses designed by Dutchman Piet Blom, which today house flats and a museum. The Witte Huse on the Oudhaven was once the first skyscraper in Europe and is a beautiful Art Nouveau building, while De Rotterdam is the modern masterpiece by Rem Koolhaas and vertically connects three towers.

And of course you should also greet the Erasmus Bridge – best from the water on a spido tour that takes you through the port and canals of Rotterdam.

While the Kop of Zuid is modern, in Delfshaven you will find a glimpse of the original Rotterdam. It is the home of Piet Hein, one of the most famous naval officers of the Netherlands, and once the place of departure of pilgrims. Today, you can go on a journey through time here and immerse yourself in the past.

roadsurfer tip: a beer at the city brewery De Pelgrim is a must when you come to Delfshaven.

Our Rotterdam favourites

Boijmans van Beuningen Museum – Once one of the best museums of modern art in Europe. Here you will find Dali, Monet, Mondrian and many more.

The museum has been closed since 2019 for a seven-year renovation, but under the project name “Boijmans bij de Buren” (Boijmans at the neighbours) you can currently admire many of the works of art in other museums.

Market hall – Rotterdam is also emulating the famous foodie cities and has created the first and largest covered market hall in Holland. Numerous stalls invite you to stroll and feast – cheese and Stroop waffles are of course also included! If you don’t care about food, then take a look upstairs, because the ceiling of the market hall is littered with countless works of art.

Luchtsingel – A cool crowdfunding project is the Luchtsingel, a wooden bridge that connects the centre of Rotterdam with the north. It crosses roads and railways and is ideal for a walk in good weather. New York fans will be particularly pleased, as it is reminiscent of the NYC High Line.

Festivals in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is always worth a visit in our eyes, but especially when the festival season starts here. The International Film Festival starts in February. This may not be able to compete with Sundance, Cannes & Co, but it is still worthwhile for film lovers.

Autumn is a nautical season, as Rotterdam celebrates the World Port Days in September. Maritime cultural programme is on the agenda with performances on and around the water. Young and old sailors can take a look at various ships and harbours and also take a look behind the scenes, as many corners are not normally open to the public.

Campsites in Rotterdam

City Camping Rotterdam

There are many beautiful campsites in the Netherlands and some of them are in or near Rotterdam. Stadscamping Rotterdam is ideally located for exploring the city. The campsite is located in an environmental zone and you can reach the city centre within ten minutes by bus or bicycle.

Camping Het Lansingerland

Camping on a farm is the concept of Camping Het Lansingerland, 10 km from the centre of Rotterdam. The site is situated directly on the banks of the Rotte and is a family-friendly and cosy place – there are only 20 pitches. The campsite is ideal for families, as it is connected to a real farm and also offers a large children’s programme. Children can make friends with the local animals, while parents can enjoy organic products from the farm shop for cooking in the camper kitchen.

Minicamping Zwetzone

Only 30 minutes from Rotterdam lies the Zwetzone minicamping site. The good motorway connection is an advantage, but once on the exit you come directly to the countryside and it is peaceful. The campsite is open all year round and the pitches are at least 100 square metres. It’s best to take your bike with you, because from here you can explore the surroundings on two wheels and make long bike rides. Even bathing enthusiasts can enjoy themselves, because in the Zweth in front of the campsite you can swim and canoe.
