Camper rental Bordeaux: The city is known for its world-famous wine and the regional cuisine of the “Bordeaux”. That is what the inhabitants of Bordeaux call themselves. Incidentally, since 2007, the city has also been on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is especially due to its new, hip neighborhoods such as La Bastide, the young trendy district in a green zone on the Garonne.
You will love Bordeaux especially for its beautiful parks and many green spaces. There will be football matches in the Public Garden, many playgrounds and marionette theaters in Parc Bordelais, and you will find an artificial grotto in Parc des Coteaux. If you travel with children you must visit Le Miroir d’Eau on the Place de la Bourse which is a 2 cm thick layer of water on 3,450 square meters of granite with mirror and fog effects, which is particularly fascinating. Do not forget substitute outfits for the kids and yourself, because you might get wet!
roadsurfer tip: So much sightseeing will make you hungry. Try the favorite candy of little Bordelais in the afternoon: Cannéles Bordelais, which is a caramelized mini Guglhupf (type of cake)! It’s delicious! Campervan hire: Rent your VW Bulli in Bordeaux and enjoy!
Camper rental Bordeaux – drive along the “Les routes des vins” de Bordeaux, which are the wine roads of the southwest. Renting and enjoying this scenery with the VW California is simply fantastic! Six of the well-known wine routes are located in the beautiful surroundings of Bordeaux. If you are a wine lover, you will know the names of the surrounding vineyards: Médoc with its famous castles, Côtes de Bourg and Blaye in the north, Saint-Émilion, Pomerol and Entre-Deux-Mers in the east, Graves and Sauternes in the south. Rent your campervan and enjoy!
Renting a VW bus in Bordeaux is especially worthwhile for gourmets, because the city has much more to offer than wine. Therefore, excursions in the well-known areas of Périgord or Cognac are suggested. Taste the tender lamb from Pauillac, or ox meat from Bazas. If you are the experienced type, have a taste of the foie gras in the region that is well known for the dish. It might not be everyone’s taste, but if you want to try it you should do it here. Also, try oysters from the Basin of Arcachon, the best local place to do so!
roadsurfer tip: An old myth says that oysters should be avoided from clams in all months that do not inclued an “r” in their name, because they can not be chilled then as well as they should be. Many people still avoid the months without an “r” , simply because oysters spawn in summer and therefore have a flavor that is way tastier.
No matter how old you are, if you climb the highest dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilar, across the white sands of the Atlantic Ocean and then walk down barefoot through the sand that gives way under your feet to the Atlantic, it will be like flying. You have more time on your hand? Then hike the dune, which is fully accessible with its 2.9 kilometers length and 616 meters width.
roadsurfer tip: Although there are 35 camp sites around the Basin of Arcachon (“Basin d’Arcachon”), we recommend booking the night before you arrive with your campervan in advance and perhaps a place on one of the five camp sites in the immediate vicinity of the city. This is so you can escape the heavy traffic of the day trippers to the dune in the early evening. In the evening, you can end this great day with a view of the glittering Atlantic Ocean or with gently rushing pines over your camper roof and a glass of wine.
You fancy history? In Périgord, the famous medieval town of Sarlat awaits you, in the Dordogne you can explore 400,000 years of human history in the caves of Lascaux. Impressive is the place of pilgrimage Rocamadour as well and if you want to reward your children for their patience when looking at the statue of the Black Madonna from the 7th century in the Marian Chapel, there is the beautiful village of Rocamadour just outside of the town where you can feed monkeys in the “Forêt des Singes”! And before you continue on your jorney, Rocamadour has given its name to a type of goat cheese, for which you will surely find room in the cooler of your camper.
Rent your campervan with the coast and sea in sight and explore the rugged, rocky coast of the Atlantic and head towards the Basque Country. At Bayonne, the secret capital of the Basque country, with its ham and bullfights, stop at Biarritz, where water sports such as surfing, body boarding and diving are famous activities for travelers.
Of course, you can also rent your campervan in Bordeaux and leave France for Spain. If you like to collect shells at “La Concha” in San Sebastian or hang out at the beach, drop France and head out. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, discover the coastal town of Barrika, with its rocky landscape which is one of the scenic backdrops of the world famous series. Next stop should be Bilbao with its well-known Guggenheim Museum, hence you add some artsy features to your road trip.
